By Tessa Bunney on 10 August 2009Anyone who might be interested in visiting or knowing more about some of the ‘craft’ villages around Hanoi may like to know of a new book just published by Sylvie Fanchette and Nicholas Stedman: Discovering Craft Villages in Vietnam: Ten itineraries around Ha Noi.
“This book, the fruit of several years research by specialists working in Northern Vietnam, comprises ten itineraries, blending potted histories, legends, descriptions of craft techniques, signposted walks and maps, designed to introduce travellers and lovers of Vietnamese culture to forty or so villages around Ha Noi. Many of us have seen their wares on sale in shops in and around the 36 streets of Ha Noi Old Quarter or in other cities in the West. This book is about the true lives and enduring skills of the nameless artisans who made them.”
Sadly, by the time I had met Sylvie in Ha Noi, she had already commissioned a photographer to undertake the photography for the book but she has been able to publish several images from my Home Work project to supplement his work.
It is published by publishers Th? Gi?i in Hanoi ISBN 978-2-7099-1671-4
